Part of the Berettaflies thread of Polychrome Heroics.
Inspired by a prompt from siliconshaman during my April 2016 Thank Muse Its Friday session.
Concurrent with “Playing Games”
“A Pretty Good Friend”
When asked,
one of the SPAZMAT people
was happy to rig a portable UV lamp
in Ashley's habitat.
It was a little cumbersome
but it lit up more than enough work space
for Ashley to be able to join the rest of them
in playing with the ultraviolet paints and markers.
Cumbersome was certainly preferable over
excluding Ashley from an activity with her team
in her own home.
That Ashley seemed surprised that
they made the effort to include her
made Tsubasa frown.
Did people exclude her a lot?
Disregard the notion that she could
meaningfully contribute to something?
Tsubasa had the bad feeling
the answer was yes.
'Well, not anymore,'
Tsubasa silently promised.
Even if this team thing didn't work,
everyone needed someone in their corner.
Tsubasa wasn't much of a superhera yet
but she was a pretty good friend.
And most of her teammates needed
one of those more than they needed a hero.

Ashley reads to me as preferring quality over quantity in a friendship and needing her alone time. But needing alone time and wanting a few good friends instead of many casual friends doesn't mean you want to be entirely alone all the time.
Tsubasa understands alone time - like a lot of creative and shy people, she also needs a certain amount of time alone.
Facet, as you said before, was once more sociable and that's his preference but most people won't see past the compound eyes and avoid him so he's lonely.

That makes sense.
>> Facet, as you said before, was once more sociable and that's his preference but most people won't see past the compound eyes and avoid him so he's lonely. <<
Poor Facet. He has been fucking miserable and hiding it for so long, he's half-forgotten that being alone is neither his nature nor good for him. It was just preferably to chasing after jerks who didn't want him around. :( But now he's struggling to cope with way more social input than he's had in several years -- and deal with three new soups in the process.
Yay Poem!

The lamp's only impractical for things that cannot be done stationary. A game of Memory or simply reading a message doesn't require a lot of mobility. If she needs to see something in UV AND needs more mobility than the lamp can afford them, that's what glasses or goggles (possibly gizmologist engineered) are for. That was their thinking anyway.
>>I love that Tsubasa is willing (and has self-assessed herself as being able) to commit to being there for Ashley even if they don't succeed as a superhero team.>>
Tsubasa doesn't always like people but when she does, she tends to get attached to said people. Now, if Ashley made it clear that she didn't like her and would like Tsubasa to please go the blank away, she would. It'd hurt but she'd do it. Since Ashley does seem to like her and has told her to go away . . . (same applies to her other teammates).
>>I now want to see Tsubasa and Haruko conspiring on something nice for Ashley.>>
Ohhh . . . *muse nabs thought for consideration and idea-generating*
