Demifiction: A Letter to Editor

Dear Editor,

I just have one question: How many people have to die or get hurt before Spectrum learns the meaning of the term “collateral damage?” That supervillains shouldn't be trying to make superbugs does not excuse them from not doing their best to reduce harm to innocent bystanders. Nor have I heard anything like an apology to any of the victims or their families.

If you are going to wear the cape, then be responsible!

Sincerely,
A Concerned Citizen

OH Love this!

I've a similar letter which will appear in the paper's day-3 or day-4 editorials page. I LOVE that average people point out the obvious-- innocent bystanders did NOT sign up for this crap!

Yay!

This is awesome. I have linked to it so other folks can find it.

You raise some excellent questions. The Spectrum have been iffy all along -- billing themselves as superheroes, attacking supervillains, and doing quite a success job of cracking secret labs -- but not taking care to minimize the collateral damage.

This kind of cossacking about may be typical of pretty much every other superhero setting, but folks in Terramagne take an extremely dim view of damage that could've been prevented with a little foresight.

You may be amused to know that two other members of the Spectrum tailed Mr. Pernicious and got into a firefight with him in a crowded public street. The scenario did not end well for any of them, and Mr. Pernicious in particular made a new enemy who is going to become a major pain in his ass. :D

Now I'm really beginning to wonder if Mr. P crossed paths with a certain French exchange student.

That would make a LOT of sense. It's certainly possible. He must have been in Easy City repeatedly. And I'm thinking that Miradoir is the one who spots a swarm on the Loyola campus.

Well, I had to think of some way to translate "gulyaet" into English. It's the Russian verb for Cossacks riding around on a rampage. Which is pretty much what I think of the Spectrum, who purport to be an organized group but are just ... not what they like to think of themselves.
